FIGHTING RACISM AND THE FAR RIGHT

The New Labour Government was not only the most hawkish of supporters of the bombing of Yugoslavia, it also introduced the most racist Asylum and Immigration policy to date. An atmosphere of racist hysteria has been created against refugees and asylum seekers. Churches, the UN High Commissioner on Refugees' representative in Britain and Bill Morris, the General Secretary of the TGWU have condemned the way in which both government and opposition have tried to out-bid each other in the intolerance of their statements about asylum seekers. The decision to withdraw benefits from asylum seekers, detain more and disperse others to 'designated accommodation' all over the UK has contributed to the atmosphere of racism against asylum seekers.

Join the Student Assembly Against Racism!

The National Assembly has launched 'Speak out against racism - Defend asylum seekers' which is a very broad coalition, including Jubilee 2000 and Amnesty International calling for restoration of asylum rights, end to racism by political parties and for legal action against newspapers inciting racial hatred (see statement). A student coalition is being assembled to launch the campaign including NUS, STAR and UJS. See article from our latest newsletter Support the 'Speak Out' Campaign
